Axles - stock Tomos vs...?

For those of you running the Tomos Moped wheels, are you running the axles that came with the wheels? They are right at 12mm. I just don't want to show up at a race and be DQ'd over something like that.

I am sure I will have several more elementary questions over the next week or two.

Thanks,

Stevie G

Most people use bolts as axles.  We do not inspect close enough to find the size differance between the 1/2" requirement and a 12mm axle.  You will be OK.

For our front axles which are stub axles off of the "C" brackets, we use grade 8 12 mm X 1.75 cap bolts. These are case hardened and supposedly the strongest ones available. I have broken many of them as has my team as well as bend them. On my car I just had the wheels re-machined so that they would accept 5/8" ID bearings and not have 5/8" grade 8 cap bolts that are again case hardened. So far the control and stability is better and I have not bent/broken/etc. any axles. In the past we would weld a nut on the "C" brackets and screw the bolts into them. That way we could replace them quickly but they tended to bend easier.

The axles that come with them are great if you are using one of these for your rear wheel. We use BMX 20" bike wheels for the rear.
