Cantilever drive axle

Right now I run a cycle car with a rear driven wheel, the axle is apart of the wheel and changing the tire means taking off the rim and chain then re-aligning the chain. Has anyone tried to use a cantilever axle for the rear drive wheel for faster tire changes and so it would let the chain always be straight? What this would do would it would let us change the tire without taking off the whole rim. Has anyone ever tried this? I think if the wheel is supported with a strong axle on the right side (Side with the chain) then it would be alright. If I you had an extra drive wheel it would be easy to get the whole wheel off and put a new one on quickly. The only problem I see with this is it would be hard to get the chain tension right.

I would guess the biggest challenge would be making sure the structure did not flex to much when loaded in a corner. Too much flex and the chain will pop off.

On your rear wheel mount which way to you have the slot for the back wheel's axle? If you point it down then the wheel sprocket is always lined up with the motor sprocket. To do this we make a motor mount so the eTEK motor can pivot for chain tension changes so the wheel does not do this---it is always in the same place. This is a little harder to make in the beginning then when the slot points to the back but the alignment is always right. Like ProEV stated if you have an identical extra rear wheel mounted up and ready to go, all you do is loosen the wheel (maybe the motor) drop it down and off then toss on the new one. Then all you have to do it get the chain tension right or close to it and you are off. The rear 'slot' for my back wheel is only about 3/4" deep so that I usually do not even have to loose and move the motor so the tension is the same after I change wheels as it was before.
