Can some one help me im trying to find what the benifits would be for a raack and pinion steering systerm over just a normal mechanical steering system with 2 tie rods connected to the steering shaft that pulls the spindles
I have one on my car that I bought at destinyparts.com. They are a little spendy, but they are really smooth for turning with no binding. Plus there is a mechanical advantage too since the rack has it's own "gear ratio" built into it. Over a go-kart steering system is more simpler, but it depends on how well built it is for it to last a while. Aaron, one of the instructors at Centennial High School has rack and pinion systems in their cars that are pulled from Geo-Metros. I know the year I won the 2010 Northwest Racing Series, several of the Willamette High School cars made their own rack and pinion systems or had a go-kart system.
The main advantage is the mechanical leverage. The cars are less tiring to steer. We have shortened racks out of Metros and golf cars both. There Is machine work involved, but that is part of the learning process.
