Can I use a vest that I can put weights into as a ballast?

The rules state that they must be securely held in place. Some good weight vest do that if the weights are the ones designed for the vest. Others will let the weights bounce around and the driver would be hurt in a bad wreck. If I was you, would ask one of the main race stewards that puts on one of the first races of the season in your area to be sure, and show them your vest with all of the ballast you are planning on using. In the NW we usually allow them as long at there is not very much ballast in them....We usually said no to those that have 40 or more pounds as we feel it is unsafe.

A NW answer: I will be the race steward at the first race (Mt Hood Collage).

I would allow it if the weight bars are secure (no open top pockets). We have a rule that if you drop ANY ballast on the track for ANY reason you will be DQed from the race. So keep your ballast very secure.

The rest is a recommendation. You can place your ballast at any height you wish. These races are about learning. But the best place to place ballast is very, very low. The lower the center of gravity the more stable your car.
