What are the best tires out there?

Currently we are using Maxis Hookworms, most local teams are running either them or the Miracle. It seems like we can get about 2 to 3 events out of a set of the hookworms. Depends a lot on how hard we take the corners.

Just curious as to what tire has the best handling and what tire has the longest wear, obviously 2 different goals. Low price is good too!

Thanks

Drew

I think you are using the best on the market (Hookworm and Miracle ) for short track competition. On large tracks we use some Kendas Kwest and they are a good tire for that application.

We have used hookworms for a number of years. Great luck with them.

For what it's worth, I probably have close to 10 hours on the same set of hookworms. New tires would be nice, tires are becoming rock hard....

I certainly notice a difference in tire wear based on driving style. Going moderately quick and the tires show no wear. Pushing the speed up to the point that the tires start to scrub and they wear down much quicker.

It's a shame it is so much fun to really push the speed in the corners as that increases the fun factor 300% along with the tire wear.

Just for driving the car, we've discussed picking up cheaper tires like the Kenda Contacts (Like $6 online) just to keep things cheap. We like to go out once in a while and drive our car around, usually without the ballast, and taking the corners a bit faster then we would in competition.

Drive technique means alot for us. apexing or arcing the corner right can help alot but alot of you know that. Little changes each lap in hour long races can have a huge result as well. I've had one of less experienced drivers almost completely use up a set of hookworms in 2 races. Funny story is we race on a very popular asphalt oval and we're are in the middle of all there races on a saturday night and we pick up more rubber than we lay down from all the rubber on the track from the stock cars. It takes like an hour to pick it all off but its the last race of the season so i still have to do it soon.

Jake, are you talking about rubber buildup getting on the car itself?

Here's a racing secret: Use pledge cleaner to clean the car. Not only does it clean it, but makes it hard for the rubber to adhere to the car. We use pledge on our race wheels on my miata all the time :)

No, I'm talking on the tire itself. It gets stuck in between the tread marks and it looks like a pair of slicks that ran on sandpaper. We use armourall tire shine for it not to stick so much on the tire but it doesn't solve the problem.

When we race at Portland International we have the same rubber buildup. We figure that at the next short track race it gets peeled off and don't worry about it.

I have tried several different tires and I like the Hookworms and Miracles best. The surface of the track makes a big difference, too. Whenever we race at USF Tampa, I figure on wearing out the front tires. The asphalt is very abrasive there and just shreds the tread off the tires. When we used to race at Brevard Community College, the tires showed almost no wear. Their parking lot has been sealed many times and is very smooth. The last time we raced there (May 2008) I put a whole new set of tires on my car and they all still had the mold lines on them after running two one-hour races!

Is there a quality wheel that is good with drum brakes? How do drum brakes work as far as changing the tires (and/or spokes if used)?

The Tomos Moped wheels will take the Maxxis 20" Hookworm and as far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong about this) the Maxxis 20" Miracle tires as well.

The Tomos wheels don't need to be adjusted for spoke tension since it's an all aluminum one piece rim with the drum brake built into it.

Thanks Zaine I checked out the Tomos Moped wheels they look good. Is there anything less expensive for wheels with built in drum brakes?

Not that I have found. If anyone does find better and cheaper wheels let me know. I swear by the Tomos Wheels as nearly bullit proof. Since I do group buys of about 20 I often get them for about $110 tp 125 each.
