Electronic Lap Counting
Permalink

I am a Electronic Engineering Technology instructor at a Tech College here in Kansas. Myself and one of my classes is curently designing and building a electronic lap counting system we hope to use here in Kansas. We will be testing it this spring and if all goes well we may offer to build one for other states. Is what I was wanting to get a opinion on is the way we record our times. Right now we have our software wrote to record the time from the start of the race rather than starting the clock at 62 min and recording the time that is left. Is their really any real reason to record the time that is left? My plan was to still run a large clock that the drivers could see that would show the time that was left but I was going to record the time from the start of the race. The ones of you that are running electronic lap counting how are you recording times?

In the Northwest we record times from the start of the race and the timer runs for 62 minutes. I'm sure Aaron, "Electrathon" or Mark "wattsup" will respond. Those are the two that are in charge of the system we had donated a few years back and they have worked through several bugs with various things on ours.

The clock starts at the drop of the flag. At 60 minutes there is a trwo minute window to allow the car to cross the finish line one last time. The clock stops and records the exact time of the last cross. This is used for tie breaking purposes. Half laps and position on the track at the 60 minute mark do not count. Feel free to call me and I can explain this better.

Yes it is. We banged it up this last summer in a local race when someone hit us in the back but we are in the process of repairing and repainting. When we get it done I think where going to leave it just for larger tracks. We have another all alluminum short track car.

We've had one for years we race on the one long track race in the NW. This year we have two and are planning on racing them in both 2 long long and the 13 short track race days, We also have one that we used to race that we widened and raised a little for larger kids but that one is in really bad shape now and needs lots of work.

do you have fiberglass or carbon? ours is carbon. What do you use for batterys? I have had the best luck running 10 PSH-12100f2-fr power sonic batterys

You need to weigh then to get under 72# is the only thing.

With our budget we have all fiberglass.
Kirk gave us the first one off of his mold so we could get it out in the field. I picked it up on Tuesday and we ran it at Portland International Raceway that weekend....On Monday bugs out and ran for 44 miles in the hour. Grate group of kids that year.
Then a past student bought one and did not do much with it and gave it to us for $100.
Then I traded 4 'used' blue sky bodies for one this last summer.
For us fiberglass is much easier to fix and do the upkeep on when boo boos happen!
Almost all of the cars in the NW use the Optima Yellow tops. We run the 75/25 series.

You must have small kids to get 2 yellow tops in one of Kirks cars. I would love to run two yellow tops but can't seem to get the room for them.

IMG_5500.JPGIn Fl. we have a system that we use.  The program records each cars lap times, lap number and running total time.  It will even call out the times as the cars go by if you want it to.  We count down the time and anyone can come by the score keepers table and see up to the min. times and lap totals.  At some races we have a flat screen monitor to make it easier to track. We use it locally in Tampa and took it to Five Flags in Pensacolla Fl last year to use on their 1/2 mile stock car track.  It has 10' uprights and a tressel with a 30' span over the track.  We would like to have a large clock for the drivers to see but thats in the future.
